Mass changing licenses
Hi. I uploaded a lot of audio files for Lingua Libre earlier, which are licensed CC-BY-SA. I'd like to change all of them to CC0, is it possible to do this automatically? '''[[User:CanonNi]]''' (talk • contribs) 01:09, 2 January 2025 (UTC)

Lupton photo
This photo on this commons page:
is labelled incorrectly. It should be "Lord_Mayor_Hugh_Lupton_(in_Mayoral_chains)_at_a_luncheon_in_Leeds_with_Lord_Harewood_(right)."
The word "right" should be at the end of the desrciption, not "Left". Thanks 175.38.37.197 00:59, 6 January 2025 (UTC)

how to show proof of owners permission of a image?
if the owner on the image gives me permission to use it how do i show that he gave me permission that i can use the image on wikipedia? Hiro1771 (talk) 07:12, 1 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Hiro1771: Hi, The copyright holder should send a permission for a free license via COM:VRT. Yann (talk) 10:59, 1 January 2025 (UTC)

To insert an image in an English Wikipedia page from a Russian Wikipedia page
Hi, I'm writing an English wikipedia page about a person P.E. El'yasberg. There is a picture of him in the corresponding Russian wikipedia page https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%AD%D0%BB%D1%8C%D1%8F%D1%81%D0%B1%D0%B5%D1%80%D0%B3,_%D0%9F%D0%B0%D0%B2%D0%B5%D0%BB_%D0%95%D1%84%D0%B8%D0%BC%D0%BE%D0%B2%D0%B8%D1%87 . Could I use it in the English wikipedia page legally? If so, how can I do it? I tried with inserting directly the filename "П. Е. Эльясберг.jpg" but it didn't work. Do I need to download and reupload it? If so, how can I determine the copyright status of it, as the link inserted by the previous uploader is already not accessable http://www.kik-sssr.ru/0.6.5_NII-4_Eliasberg.htm
Thank you. Arrivedercigrazie (talk) 13:59, 1 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Arrivedercigrazie: presumably yes (by downloading from ru-wiki and uploading directly to en-wiki). en-wiki typically allows one non-free image of a deceased person if no free image is available. You will need to read en:Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline and you will need to use en:Template:Non-free use rationale.
- Note that although I have answered here, none of this involves Commons, which does not allow any non-free use. Please do not upload the image to Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 20:59, 1 January 2025 (UTC)
Blurry image not used in any article
I came across the file File:Moto-phone.png while editing the article it was supposed to be added to, en:Moto G54 5G. Someone else removed it from the article because it's too blurry and low-resolution - they're not wrong, IMO. If an image is seemingly too low-quality to be used for any purpose, and it's not being used in any articles, does Commons have any policy that recommends deleting it? -- numbermaniac (talk) 15:07, 1 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Numbermaniac: Hi, and welcome. You could ask the uploader GDPSxGD if they can do better. You could also nominate it for deletion per COM:DP. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 15:18, 1 January 2025 (UTC)
- A policy upon which you could base a deletion request is COM:EDUSE. A file that cannot be realistically used for educational purposes is not included in our project's scope. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 15:53, 1 January 2025 (UTC)
- I nominated the file for deletion. It's not only out of scope, it's also possibly a copyvio: at a closer look, one could see the cropping vestiges of a hand holding the phone. If it is a legitimate "own work", then there is no reason to use such a minuscule image size and for making a photo while holding the device. But if it's a crop from some ad, maybe a screenshot from some video, then the small size and the indentations where fingers would have hold the phone are totally explainable - and reason all the more for deletion. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 00:48, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks, that works. I did wonder if it was a screenshot or crop from a video, but I didn't pick up on the indentations and them potentially being a hand holding the phone. Nice pickup! -- numbermaniac (talk) 17:11, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
- The file has no source. Neither do File:Backphone.png and File:Da-CASEEEEE.png. They can be deleted for that reason. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:31, 2 January 2025 (UTC)

You should just go to Commons and request deletion of the logo
Hello,
The draft process only considers the text and sources. You should just go to Commons and request deletion of the logo; once the draft is accepted you can then upload the image to this Wikipedia directly as a "fair use" image.
Can you help me? Andriuspetrulevic (talk) 12:34, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Andriuspetrulevic: Hi, and welcome. You neglected to quote 331dot's en:special:diff/1266835269. If you have permission from the company for File:Artwin logo.svg documented on their website or social media, please indicate that on the file description page. If not, please have someone in authority there send or post permission as explained on VRT. Otherwise, the file will probably be deleted here in about a week; you could accelerate that as explained on COM:SD. If you can't get permission, uploading of this logo on enwiki as fair use should follow en:WP:F after the article is in mainspace. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 12:48, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
- The user is a company employee that admits the company owns the logo; I suggested that they just delete it and deal with the logo later. 331dot (talk) 12:51, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
- @331dot: Thank you. Unfortunately, "just delete it" is not allowed here for regular users. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 12:55, 2 January 2025 (UTC)

Unless you see some sort of free license on the site in question (you haven't provided a link, so I can't look), it's not suitable for Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 04:13, 3 January 2025 (UTC)

Removal of photo under wrong reason
Editor, they removed the photo I uploaded to the commons claiming it was "personal and of low quality", but it wasn't. It was an Adobe stock wallpaper, AI generated, edited by me with all licenses for use (free usage) and when I uploaded it I completed the form as requested. I didn't understand the reason for the removal. Thomàz Mazzei (talk) 06:01, 3 January 2025 (UTC)

Library of Congress images - how to get them onto Commons if I know they’re PD?
VIA Template:PD-Look, I know these images I’d like on the commons are presumably public domain. But the problem is - the Library of Congress does not provide direct digital versions of the photographs. How can I access them and get them here? Sigma Mogglet (talk) 15:14, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
- Go to the Library of Congress and take photos. The Library of Congress is one of the largest libraries in the world, so they will inevitably have millions of items that are not available digitally. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 15:20, 3 January 2025 (UTC)

- Traveling to the United States to take a photograph may not be a practical solution, but it's the only one you've got, other than requesting that someone already here does it for you or maybe hiring someone on a task performing website. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 20:36, 3 January 2025 (UTC)

- Are you sure they are PD? There is no indication on the pages of the images that they are PD. Normally, if they were PD, that would be indicated as such in the pages at the LoC. The fact that the LoC does not provide digital versions is also another clue that the images may not be PD. More precisely, the rights statement for those images specify that the copyright is held by the United States, after transfer from the previous copyriht holder. That is not a release to the public domain. The relevant body of the US could release the copyrights if it wanted to, but there is no indication that it did. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:24, 3 January 2025 (UTC)

- Hi, and welcome. I regret to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/281. Please read Mediawiki:Abusefilter-disallowed-pdf-new-user-upload again. Also, you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a pdf image as a new user. Such uploads of pdf images are not allowed at all. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a pdf image, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but if you were not the original image designer or photographer, that person may need to license it on their official website or social media, or send the image and permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. In addition, any non-jpg raster image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload svg or jpg versions, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid filter 153, but you will run into Special:AbuseFilter/281 until you have Autopatrol. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 18:05, 3 January 2025 (UTC)

Third opinion requested on AI upscaling
I flagged many of User:Paper9oll's uploaded YouTube video stills as looking to me like obvious AI upscales, but in a subsequent discussion on their talk page they've said that they are simply downloading the original videos and capturing frames from them, and don't believe the images to be upscaled, or agree with me that they even look upscaled. I'm concerned that some step along their capture process could be applying AI upscaling without them being aware of it.
An example upload is shown to the right. To the left is the image Paper9oll uploaded, to the right is my own attempt to capture the same still from the same video.
Paper9oll's image is twice the size of mine, but they say on their talk page that the video they used is 4K (3,840 × 2,160 pixels). The highest resolution I'm able to view and snapshot on YouTube is 1,920 × 1,080, but perhaps YouTube has decided against offering me the 4K version for its own reasons.
Paper9oll's image does seem to show clear signs of AI upscaling which aren't discernable in the original 1080 video. Across the subject's forehead, individual hairs are visible (forming an unusual pinstripe pattern), but below her chin this instantly cuts off to a much lower resolution blur. Her hand and clothes are also much less well defined than the rest of the photo, in a way that doesn't seem like a natural focus blur from a video camera.
Can I get some other views on what might be happening here? Are there any known issues where, for example, YouTube itself would AI-upscale a video to 4K before serving it? Belbury (talk) 20:02, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
- Looks AI to me: highlights on three fingers of her right hand made to look more like fingernails on the wrong side of the finger; skin looks like it has been through some sort of "cosmetic" filter; I could list more, but I think that is enough. - Jmabel ! talk 20:13, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
- "perhaps YouTube has decided against offering me the 4K version for its own reasons" As I recall, there are times that the site will only give a certain maximum resolution to non-paying users and a higher one to those who have whatever weird subscription services they offer. While the other user's capture is clearly more sharp, it's not obviously AI-y to me. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 21:19, 3 January 2025 (UTC)

I have Vector legacy selected in my Preferences and it just ignores my preferences and uses Minerva instead? Using another theme also does not work, everything stays the same. Polygnotus (talk) 21:07, 3 January 2025 (UTC)

- Thank you, but that does not appear to change anything as far as I can see. I am using the latest Firefox on Win11. Screenshots: https://imgur.com/a/YWJxbNW Enabling and disabling the local exception toggle for the theme also did nothing. Polygnotus (talk) 21:21, 3 January 2025 (UTC)

- I think I'm just stupid. The url contained an "m" for mobile (followed a link here so I did not notice that at first). I removed it and I got the correct theme back. Am I not allowed to choose a mobile theme, only use the Desktop version of the site? I know the new theme is optimized for mobile but its not optimized for my (lack of a) brain. Polygnotus (talk) 21:26, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
- Not stupid at all. If you want to see the mobile version of the site, there is a "mobile view" at the very bottom of the (desktop) page and you can choose that and navigate to any page from there just like you would in standard desktop. You can always go to "m.[site]" to see its mobile version for all the WMF wikis. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 21:33, 3 January 2025 (UTC)

Image info page URLs at AMNH digital collections
I discovered the American Museum of Natural History has a lot of public domain images, but I'm unable to link directly to individual image info pages in the Commons file description source fields unless I go to them through a Google image search. Anyone knows how? For example images from this gallery[5], the URL always stays the same for the first image where I did the search from. FunkMonk (talk) 18:24, 4 January 2025 (UTC)
- @FunkMonk: They do seem to have made it deliberately difficult.
- At least in Firefox: if you hover over an image, you will see a URL like https://digitalcollections.amnh.org/asset-management/2URM1THAZYV at lower left in sort of a tooltip. If you make the obvious substitution into the original URL, it seems to work. But it's a pain, because you can't copy-paste, and you can't see it while you replicate it.
- You also can go into the page source and pull out the href value, which is a pain but at least lets you copy-paste.
- But of course all of these leave you with a dubious URL: it would still say "Elotherium" whether the image is Elotherium or not. - Jmabel ! talk 19:52, 4 January 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks, and weird it's always the "wrong" URL. The strange thing is that I have been lucky enough to get the direct URLs with the right names through simple Google image searches, so there must be some direct way? FunkMonk (talk) 20:00, 4 January 2025 (UTC)
SVG image claims its thumbnails are unauthorized
File:Hypercubestar.svg is a diagram of a 4d hypercube graph, used on multiple languages of Wikipedia. The svg image itself looks ok to me. However, all of its bitmap images appear to be broken making it unusable in Wikipedia articles. For instance the default size is https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/f8/Hypercubestar.svg/330px-Hypercubestar.svg.png. When I try to open it I do not see a png, but instead an html error page with the text "Unauthorized. This server could not verify that you are authorized to access the document you requested." I found some discussion with this message at Commons talk:Structured data/Archive 2019#Early depicts testing but it did not appear relevant. Changing the svg coding, removing an image gallery from the image description, purging the cache, etc., did not help. I am only seeing this issue on this one image, not on other recently uploaded svg images. Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong? David Eppstein (talk) 01:05, 6 January 2025 (UTC)

Installing a picture
I downloaded a picture to you of Dr. Robert Howell Perks. How do I get it to appear on his page? Powenbarnes (talk) 18:30, 1 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Powenbarnes: for the future, if you are asking questions like this, it would be useful if you would link the picture in question and link the page you mean by "his page".
- You don't seem to ever have uploaded a picture to this site (Wikimedia Commons). It looks like you tried to upload File:Picture of Robert Perks.png with a statement that it is a photo that you took yourself today (2025-01-01), and that you tried to do this by a cross-wiki upload from en-wiki (the English-language Wikipedia). Basically, you hit a filter that says that small image files uploaded cross-wiki by relatively new users are considered suspect.
- If you really did take the photo yourself as you say, you should be able to upload it directly on Commons, using Commons:UploadWizard. Please provide the highest resolution of the photo available, be accurate about the date you took the photo, and add appropriate categories. - Jmabel ! talk 21:11, 1 January 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you for helping me with attempt to install this picture of Robert H. Perks. I did not say I took this picture myself. What I said was that I received this picture from The Order of the Cross archives at their HQ in London in 2011. I apologize for any misunderstanding I have created. I will attempt to follow your instructions. Thank you for your help. Sincerely, P.Owen Barnes Powenbarnes (talk) 11:39, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Powenbarnes
That you received the picture fro the subject does not mean you are allowed to upload it. You need permission from the copyright owner. This is unlikely to be the subject of the picture.🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 11:53, 5 January 2025 (UTC)- I'll try that again. I misread your message. The archive from where you received it must also give you permission to upload it here. By doing so you licence it for onward use, and that may not be their wish. There are always complexities with pictures and permissions when they are old, because they are likely to be at the borderline of the expiry of copyright. Apologies for the prior irrelevant answer. 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 11:58, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Timtrent: that is actually misleading. "Permission to upload it here" is useless, and does not imply a license.
- If the picture is copyrighted, then the copyright-holder (whoever that may be) need to explicitly offer a free license such as {{CC-BY 4.0}}. If there is a publicly viewable web site or page clearly under control of the copyright-holder, then they have the option of stating the permission there. Otherwise, they need to go through the email-based process described at COM:VRT.
- @Powenbarnes: I'm sorry this is complicated, but it is. If that photo is still copyrighted, then Commons can host it only if it is free-licensed.
- Also, you say "I did not say I took this picture myself," but somewhere along the way, either in answering a question in the UploadWizard or in making a manual edit, you must have described it as your own work, because the source field there says "{{Own}}". - Jmabel ! talk 18:49, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
- Jmabel; All of this is absurd! I did not take the picture. Dr. Perks was born in 1854 and died in the twenties. I was born in 1952! I have no idea who took the picture or when. It was passed down to me from an elderly member of the Order of the Cross. Dr. Perks had no descendants so there is no one to contest anything about its reproduction . Nobody cares about it. He was an esteemed member of the Order, serving as the executive secretary to the founder John Todd Ferrier. I am an unpaid officer of the Order, being the "Inquirers Liaison" for north America. I apologize for being annoyed. The simple task of trying to get a picture of Dr. Perks onto his page has been turned into a mini ordeal because no one understands that this picture has no copyright issues, whatsoever, attached to it. End of story. Sincerely, P. Owen Barnes Powenbarnes (talk) 21:39, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Powenbarnes: sadly, not end of story. Unless we can show that the picture is from 1904 or earlier (in which case we can use it on the basis of {{PD-assumed}} for a 120-year-old work with no known author), this is an "orphaned" copyright. Many sites will happily take a picture on that basis, but Commons does not. Commons is specifically a repository of free media, which does not include orphaned media. See COM:PCP if you want a bit more of an explanation of what that means.
- Assuming your intent is to add this to the English-language Wikipedia article en:Robert H. Perks, the English-language Wikipedia will allow uploading it to the English-language Wikipedia under the policy outlined at en:Wikipedia:Non-free content. You will need to upload there (not here) and use en:Template:Non-free use rationale to explain why this is being used. Note that that does not involve Commons at all. If you need help doing that, I recommend en:Wikipedia:Teahouse as a good place to get help on the English-language Wikipedia. - Jmabel ! talk 00:36, 6 January 2025 (UTC)

Uploading (or downloading, not sure which) a picture to a page.
I have been attempting to upload or download (not sure which it is) a picture to Robert H. Perks page. After many attempts, I was not successful. I did not take this picture myself. It was given to me by a fellow member of The Order of the Cross. Robert H. Perks was a member of the Order in the early 20th century. In attempting to install this picture, I encountered a labyrinth of instructions that were all but impossible to navigate. I would just like to install this picture on his page as none exists there. There are no copyright issues or rights being infringed by my possession of this image. I realize the need for security, yet the way security is implemented here makes the process so arcane and difficult to navigate that I find myself going in endless circles of dead ends and/or cul-de-sacs just trying to get this picture installed. Any simple, understandable and implementable methodology you could convey to me would be very helpful. Thanks for your listening to me about this subject, hope you can help me with this simple request. Sincerely, P. Owen Barnes Powenbarnes (talk) 12:00, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Powenbarnes: "I encountered a labyrinth ... so arcane and difficult to navigate that I find myself going in endless circles" : It almost sounds like you met the Upload Wizard. ;-) Firstly, you must determine the copyright satus of the image. Although there are no rights infringed by your possession of the image, rights might be infriged by your publication of the image. The copyright status can be influenced by various factors, including the identity of the person who created the picture, the year of the death of that creator, the year and the country of the first publication of the picture. Please disclose those four elements of information. Given the subject, the odds are that the image is in the public domain, but the supporting information must still be provided. If the picture is confirmed to be freely usable, then you can upload the file. If you do not wish to use the tool Upload Wizard, you can instead go to the simple upload form and fill all the info as best as you can, minor mistakes can still be fixed after the upload. Yes, by convention, the word upload is used. Finally, you can display the file in the article on Wikipedia, or another user can do it. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:26, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
Image of Vice President (copyright?)
I'm trying to upload an image (see [6]), but I'm not sure what copyright to put it under. I was going to put it under PD-USGov, but I'm not sure. The creator of the work is Bruce Glikas, if that helps. Ali Beary (talk) 19:01, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
- Assuming you mean the image of Biden there (wondering because you said "vice president") why would you expect that a Bruce Glikas photo would be either free-licensed or in the public domain? This seems unlikely for a living professional photographer who is not a government employee. Or am I missing something? - Jmabel ! talk 20:07, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Jmabel, ah, sorry, he was VP at the time. - @H0n0r: without getting into the copyright issue: vector versions can't overwrite raster versions. Can I upload a book cover to Wikipedia?
I want to upload a book cover from a book, but I have a question: Is this allowed or not? HuyHoang2011 (talk) 03:20, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
- @HuyHoang2011: typically not allowed, unless it is old enough to be out of copyright, simple enough to be below the threshold of originality, free-licensed by its copyright-holder, etc. In other words, the same considerations apply to a book cover as to any third-party work.
- That all assumes you are talking about here on Commons, where you asked the question. Each Wikipedia for a different language has its own rules about non-free content uploaded directly to that Wikipedia without involving Commons. If that's what you meant, you'd have to check the policy of the Wikipedia you are concerned with, or ask on their help desk. - Jmabel ! talk 05:20, 5 January 2025 (UTC)

search using the curid
How do I find an image if I know the curid? It seems like "curid" is unknown terminology in the search window and in searching Help.
For example, I want to find this image: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=75572270 I want to find some pages where it is used so I can find out more about the subject matter. 2601:600:9082:B2E0:7C11:C25:4216:2AFE 21:24, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
- Hi, and welcome. That URL leads to File:China Cake.jpg, whereas special:diff/75572270 leads to an old revision of File:Bridges Bikini Contest 20.jpg. I'm not sure which one you really need. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 22:45, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
- Well, it looks like you already know one way to find it. The link you provided leads to the page. There are several ways to link to a page. The page name is one way, the page ID is another way. To take your example, with internal links, the page name "File:China Cake.jpg" and the page ID "Special:Redirect/page/75572270" lead to the same page. (As do their respective urls "https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:China_Cake.jpg" and "https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=75572270".) One difference is that if the page is moved to a new page name, the page ID will remain the same. -- Asclepias (talk) 00:20, 6 January 2025 (UTC)

- If you choose any video (e.g. File:On with the Show!.webm), you will see that immediately below the video itself is a link directly to the file. Once that is loaded in your browser, you can save it with Ctrl+S or the browser's local video controls. Additionally, further down the page (File:On_with_the_Show!.webm#Transcode_status), you can see lower resolution versions that my work better on your computer or fit your screen better. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 21:45, 5 January 2025 (UTC)

Inquiry About Public Domain Status and Commercial Use of "Bushduck.PNG"
Hi there,
I hope this message finds you well.
I am writing to seek clarification regarding the copyright and public domain status of this image https://it.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Bushduck.PNG available on Wikimedia Commons. The image depicts former President George W. Bush during a press conference where shoes were thrown at him.
According to the Wikimedia page, the image is stated to be in the public domain as a work created by a U.S. Federal Government employee. I understand that such works are generally public domain under U.S. copyright law. However, I would like to confirm whether:
The image is indeed in the public domain and free of copyright restrictions.
It is permissible to use this image for commercial purposes, including on physical merchandise.
Additionally, I intend to use this image commercially in Berlin, Germany. While I understand this falls outside U.S. jurisdiction, I would appreciate any guidance on whether the public domain status extends internationally or any considerations specific to such use abroad.
Thank you for your time and assistance. Please let me know if additional information is needed from my side to facilitate your response.
Best regards, Yosif Yooosiiiff (talk) 16:39, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Yooosiiiff: Hi, and welcome. The file is available here as File:Bushduck.PNG. It is from a video shot by an employee of the Executive Office of the President of the United States, taken or made as part of that person's official duties. As a work of the U.S. federal government, it is in the public domain. Worldwide. Do what you will with it. Your signature renders that way because you put a space in front of it; the vast majority of us don't. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 17:18, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
- its a bit confusing since i found a video on youtube from AFP news agency and i can tell that the frame is taken from that video as a screenshot (min. 0.12)
- I am pretty sure its the same frame perspective and lens. so the photo is taken 100% from that video. so now i dont know who to trust in this. could wikipedia be wrong in this?
- is there any way to check officially who owns the rights? what do you think i should do in general? any help would be greeeatly appreciated
- and also, what happens if i use without taking any rights? Yooosiiiff (talk) 13:44, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Yooosiiiff: If you violate copyrights, you risk being sued and having to pay damages. Press agencies may be even more likely than the government to sue about their copyrights. If you want to do potentially illegal uses, we can't help you here. You should find a lawyer in your country. As for the creation of this particular image, it was always somewhat unclear. A user said that it was sourced from a White House webpage, which may have been true, but it seems to now be unavailable at that source. And it was never license reviewed on Commons. The angle of view is certainly almost identical to videos taken from the section of the room where cameras of several press agencies were located. The AFP video may be at a very slightly different height if you look for example at the head of the PM compared to the lines on the wall. The image could still be from AFP or from another press agency. For comparison, Commons has a video apparently taken for the U.S. Department of Defense, still available at its source and licensed reviewed on Commons. As you can see, it is taken much more from the left of the room, from a very different angle compared to the videos of the press agencies. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:21, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Yooosiiiff: If the image was really a work created by a U.S. fed. gov. employee, then it is in the public domain in the United States. However, that type of public domain status does not extend outside of the U.S. In Germany, the image is under copyright, owned by the U.S. government, in accordance with the Copyright law of Germany . See the copyright information of the U.S. government where it says "[...] the work may be protected under the copyright laws of other jurisdictions when used in these jurisdictions. The U.S. government may assert copyright outside of the United States for U.S. government works." [7]. -- Asclepias (talk) 22:41, 3 January 2025 (UTC)

I don't know what to do. I'm on the verge of a break down and think I just fucked up the one thing I had left. I've got screenshots of the pdf that I couldn't save. I think It covers what it need to in my words that fits with the context of what I'm working on and what I think you want. I feel like I've just lost the 18years of work under pressure trying to do the right thing. a direct line of communication might have helped. as I haven't known who this goes to every time type in one of these boxes. I need to walk away from this for now as I'm in snotty tears to the point I can't breath. which I hope does't get licensed to the world or maybe it needs to. Please delete if possible before I end up deleting myself! if there is a way of editing the pdf on line without it being prematurely published it would be of great help too. I hadn't filled things in that I were asked and would not have submitted half of what I did. Between being technologically challenged, having junk technology & burning myself out working for free there is a bit on my end. The confusion over figuring out if it's wiki who hacked me, someone else and the AI has just about driven me to suicide. It's difficult as I didn't understand exactly how to seperate what copyrights associated with different aspects of decades of community that's mainly seen me taken advantage of it's probably too late now anyways. Fortunately, Universal Asylum claimed global jurisdiction & declared world governments criminal organisations anyway so if any of what i believe were 6 licences I don't understand are too bad I'll consider then null and viod & whatever's relevant I treat with good faith. But if there are irrelevant ones that can be removed that would be great thanks Universal Asylum (talk) 21:23, 7 January 2025 (UTC)

Universal Asylum (talk) 08:31, 8 January 2025 (UTC)
- Is it normal for people to be hacked by your system? Sometimes I think it's just bugs in the AI then next minute it's like I'm being bullied by a pack of thugs. I am hacked and bad enough that it could only be by Wiki. They have access to everything. As I type this it threaterns to release it under the licence that I didn't even agree to. If I do a google search it takes the piss out of it. Sure not every wiki is in on but but expect the ones who are have caused suicides. Scary AF!! Universal Asylum (talk) 13:33, 8 January 2025 (UTC)

- @Mgoehring: Hi, and welcome. We would need permission from Keegan Houser for the first photo on https://news.berkeley.edu/2024/04/10/rich-lyons-longtime-campus-business-innovation-leader-will-be-uc-berkeley-s-next-chancellor/ (specifically, the shown 1536 × 1024 pixels version or the 1920 × 1280 pixels larger version I found) as explained on VRT. Failing that, we would need permission from the Board of Regents of the University of California, along with a signed transfer of copyright or licensing rights from Keegan Houser, subject to the same explanation. Ask any faculty member in the Law Dept. You originally uploaded it as File:ChancellorsRichardKLyons.jpg, and Yann deleted it as a copyvio. - I'm confused. You say you "found [these] images on Flickr". (1) Are you User:Pitpisit, and if so why are you not logged in while asking this? (2) When you say "These images are tagged as being in compliance with Philippine copyright law," do you mean that the uploader tagged them as being in compliance, or that there is something on Flickr that I'm missing? (3) In general, copyright questions are much better asked at COM:VP/C than on the help desk. - Jmabel ! talk 20:29, 8 January 2025 (UTC)
- The template itself specifies that it only applies "unless otherwise noted". The flickr pages do note otherwise. I need a image I made mistakes with deleted, very sorry
I uploaded this image [8] and messed up some of the details and information. The date is wrong, the source is wrong, and I fear the image is too poor of quality. It is completely my mistake and I’m more than willing to admit that. If someone could please remove it for me that’s be great. I’ll work to avoid mistakes like this in the future and I’m truly sorry.
(if this isn’t the right place to make this type of request, please let me know) Therguy10 (talk) 05:29, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
- Hello Therguy10, there are several points to be addressed here. First: making errors is only human, and asking for help the correct way to go. Second: if you make an error that makes you wanting your recently uploaded file deleted, use the speedy deletion process. Third: working on logos is finicky about copyrights. As the nutshell here says: "[Commons] strictly enforces copyright and licensing restrictions, even if copyright holders do not." You need to have a quite thorough understanding about thresholds of originality and Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter#Trademarks to contribute meaningfully, without encountering IP rights issues (your upload at File:The Big Bad Wolf - Wolf’s Revenge logo.jpg would be OK as {{PD-Textlogo}}, but most likely only without the eye graphics). Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 05:41, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you for that! I’ll try to tag it for deletion asap! Therguy10 (talk) 16:17, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
- So as far as those text logos go, I’m starting to wonder if Wolf would actually be ok to use. My main logo comparison is something like Siren’s Curse logo. Maybe the eyes wouldn’t be a huge deal? Thoughts? Therguy10 (talk) 04:21, 4 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Therguy10: Thanks for your comment. I believe that File:Siren's Curse Logo white background.png, as an work created in America, is likely to exceed the American threshold of originality, and is therefore unsuitable to be used as a comparison. I will consider its deletion after searching for further evidence. That same section also have a list of uncopyrightable and copyrightable files for your reference, regards.廣九直通車 (talk) 09:03, 9 January 2025 (UTC)

- Hello Modern_primat,
- No there is no page for him. I have never worked on wiki before so I'll have to look into making the page for him. Unfortunately, most of his records were lost in the National Archives fire of 1973. I received his OMPF a couple of years ago, and it is missing A LOT of information. Billbo1970 (talk) 19:44, 7 January 2025 (UTC)
- sorry to hear that. it seems you cannot upload images here. no sources, no articles, no photos. but keep researching, i hope you will do it. modern_primat ඞඞඞ ----TALK 22:06, 7 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Modern primat I have his official OMPF that I can scan and upload. I have the document stating all of the medals, awards, and citations he was given. If the US Federal Government is not a source, then I don't know what is! Billbo1970 (talk) 22:41, 7 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Billbo1970: I'm trying to understand: are you wanting to put things up here as an illustration of particular medals, or because of this particular person who was your grandfather, or what? I realize that your grandfather was important to you, but usually we don't build up repositories of information about individuals here unless they are of some broader historic significance. @Modern primat: the existence of Category:Recipients of the Bronze Star Medal (United_States) does not mean that receiving a Bronze Star makes someone inherently notable by Commons standards. It's just a way to gather together which people of Commons-level notability received that particular decoration. - Jmabel ! talk 04:28, 8 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Jmabel I want to add his name to the existing list of recipients for this medal. The vast majority of his records were burned in the 1973 fire at the National Archives, so it is good to have the information online digitally. Further, since this is a list of recipients, he is someone who should be on it. Billbo1970 (talk) 18:25, 8 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Billbo1970: since what is a list of recipients? Normally, Commons does not have "list pages," that is more of a Wikipedia thing.
- In the Vietnam War alone, 719,969 people received the Bronze Star. I cannot imagine we have a list of them, or that that brings 719,969 people up to the required level of notability. - Jmabel ! talk 20:12, 8 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Jmabel This is the page I am referring to:
- https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Recipients_of_the_Bronze_Star_Medal_(United_States) Billbo1970 (talk) 20:45, 9 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Billbo1970: that category is not intended to be a comprehensive list of (millions of) Bronze Star recipients. It is a way to note, for a picture or category within Commons's scope that the person in question is a Bronze Star recipient. There has actually been some pushback lately against having Commons categories for recipients of particular medals, on the basis that that is more of a Wikidata or Wikipedia thing, but I suspect that the effort to get rid of these categories entirely is going nowhere. But it remains the case that for a decoration received by literally millions of people, just receiving that decoration does not qualify as "notability" and does not make materials related to that person inherently in scope. - Jmabel ! talk 22:03, 9 January 2025 (UTC)

- @ArchoDarko1: Noncommercial restrictions aren't allowed on Commons. See COM:L. Abzeronow (talk) 01:58, 10 January 2025 (UTC)
- "Media licensed exclusively under non-commercial only licenses (like CC BY-NC-SA) are not accepted" on Commons. Commons:Licensing. So the images were very correctly deleted, as they were not licensed free enough for Commons. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 02:01, 10 January 2025 (UTC)

Making a profile picture current.
For this musical artist, I am simply updating her profile picture. She provided it to me, and told me "the copyright owner/photographer gave me permission to use the photo for online promotional purposes." Misteredcraig (talk) 05:02, 10 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Misteredcraig: while it is usually helpful to link a particular article and/or file when asking a question, in this case I can tell you from what you've written that that isn't sufficient permission for Commons. Commons accepts only files that are either in the public domain (not relevant for this) or are free-licensed with an explicit license from the copyright holder, free enough to allow derivative works and commercial use. In a case like this, where I presume the image has already been published without any indication of such a license, we need the copyright-holder (that is typically the photographer) to go through the process outlined at COM:VRT to indicate such a license. NOTE that this requires an email directly from the copyright-holder to the VRT. Yes, this is unusually stringent, but that is because this is supposed to be an archive of images that are freely reusable. - Jmabel ! talk 07:41, 10 January 2025 (UTC)

- Irrelevant. This was not a rights issue.
- When you've made a hundred or so significant edits to any WMF project, you can request undeletion of the personal photo at COM:UDR. (This presumes you intend to use it on your user page either on Commons or one or more of the sister projects; otherwise, it would still not be in scope.)

It is my intention to use the personal photo appropriately, either on a user page or within the scope of the Wikimedia guidelines, once I meet the contribution threshold.
- If you have any additional suggestions on how I can effectively contribute or areas where my involvement could be most impactful, I would be grateful for your advice.
- Thank you again for your guidance and for helping me better understand Wikimedia's standards. I look forward to becoming a more active and constructive member of this community.

- @Blitzite2: Are we talking the "Steam" logo with the thing like a rod drive, or something else? If it's that one, it's pretty close to the line for whether it is copyrightable. (If it's copyrightable, then it is certainly copyrighted.). I'd suggest you take that question (with the two links, yours & mine) to Commons:Village pump/Copyright to ask about the U.S. threshold of originality as it applies to that.
- If you mean the "Class of '09" thing on what looks like lined paper at a 45° angle, that is certainly below the threshold, and can be uploaded with {{Textlogo}} + {{Trademarked}}. - Jmabel ! talk 02:02, 19 January 2025 (UTC)

- Look I'm sorry for being confusing. How do I get this on the page? How do I upload the file? Just please bear with me. Blitzite2 (talk) 21:06, 19 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Blitzite2: You upload with whatever upload tool you prefer. The most common for beginners is Commons:UploadWizard. I personally don't use it, so I can't guide you through it, but it's a wizard so it kind of guides you through itself. If they don't offer an option that amounts to "too simple for copyright" you'll have to use the option that lets you specify a license tag, and use {{Textlogo}}. After uploading you can edit the file page to add {{Trademarked}}.
- The "how do I upload" question had me realize you are even more new at this than I thought. I see you have one prior upload, File:MAXCVRDE.png. I see you describe this as your "own work". Just to make sure: are you saying you are the illustrator who drew this? I see uploads considerably earlier than your upload to Commons (e.g. at https://www.thegamer.com/max-caulfields-return-to-life-is-strange-is-just-what-we-need/ which do not indicate the free license you say you are offering here and do not credit you as the author.

Photos of vintage toys
I am editing the Wikipedia article en:Brickplayer. This is a British construction toy that was produced from 1938 to the mid-60s by J. W. Spear and Sons. I have personally-taken photos of the Brickplayer kits, which are now anything from 60 to 80+ years old. Can I upload these to the Commons, or might this be a copyright violation? - @TonyOHagan: Are there copyright notices on any of the packaging? — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 18:06, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
- No! The box says "British and Foreign Patents", but there are no copyright statements or symbols and no mention of a registered trademark. TonyOHagan (talk) 18:53, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
- Copyright notice probably wouldn't actually be relevant, because with the URAA restoration of UK copyrights in the U.S., unless they were "simultaneously" (within 30 days) published in the U.S., anything copyrightable from the UK in that era is still copyrighted in the U.S. (unless somehow it was already out of copyright in the UK in 1996), and will be until 95 years from initial publication. So (1) take advantage of en-wiki's allowance for non-free content to upload your best photo there (not involving Commons) and (2) if you have photos where you can firmly date the copyrighted elements, we can work something out for you to upload them here on Commons and then immediately delete them and note them to be undeleted at an appropriate date. For example, something with only a 1938 copyright could end up in Category:Undelete in 2034. - Jmabel ! talk 19:28, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
- This is a quagmire. I cannot see what harm could possibly arise from including the Brickplayer logo and images of Brickplayer kit boxes and content. They would be helpful to readers of the Wikipedia page and make it more attractive, and if there still is a copyright holder they could hardly give a damn about a toy that has been defunct for 60 yeaers and could never be marketed to a modern consumer. But unfortunately the intricacies of Wikimedia requirements are labyrinthine. I have looked at the free-use guidance, and simply cannot be bothered to wade through all that stuff. So the page will not have images, full stop. But seriously, apologies for the rant and thanks for your help. I don't mean to sound ungrateful! TonyOHagan (talk) 19:54, 13 January 2025 (UTC)

- No! The box says "British and Foreign Patents", but there are no copyright statements or symbols and no mention of a registered trademark. TonyOHagan (talk) 18:53, 13 January 2025 (UTC)

- @Myron.levin: The author is Artaxerxes, who is still active on Wikimedia Commons. If they don't reply here, you might want to try contacting them through User talk:Artaxerxes. --bjh21 (talk) 22:51, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
How do I change an infobox description?
R.B.D. Blakeney's page says he was a general. The Imperial War Museum and National Archive say otherwise. Clarityfiend (talk) 22:33, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Clarityfiend: I think you're referring to the description on Category:R.B.D. Blakeney. That comes from Wikidata, so you can edit it at R.B.D. Blakeney (Q7273305). Note that you may not see all the languages when you open that page: "All entered languages" might help. --bjh21 (talk) 22:57, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Clarityfiend: https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/32626/supplement/1796 indicates that he was an Honorary Brigadier-General. - Jmabel ! talk 02:40, 14 January 2025 (UTC)
Photo of military robot rover
Hi I want to know if military robot rovers are copyrightable or not? I want to upload this image here: [9] I am asking because I am not sure if it counts as a vehicle or not, but I saw that there are plenty of other military/bomb squad rovers available in Commons. Thanks for the help. Tvpuppy (talk) 01:55, 15 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Tvpuppy: the rover itself is not, that's just a camouflage pattern painted on it. But the photograph is copyrighted unless there is proof of free license: Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Taiwan. MKFI (talk) 07:39, 15 January 2025 (UTC)
- Understood. Thanks for your reply. Tvpuppy (talk) 07:44, 15 January 2025 (UTC)
