As a rough guideline, administrators usually require editors to have made more than 500 useful non-botlike edits, and to have been active in the last thirty days. Patrollers and License reviewers don't have to request this flag.
I am an experienced user and upload a lot of audio files, largely pertaining to the voices of certain peoples. I would like to be able to upload mp3 files to reduce the work needed in this process and to be able to upload large mp3 files that cannot be converted to another file format. Furthermore, I'm currently in the process of uploading various anthems from a free site and it would make the process much easier since the files are all mp3s. Thank you. Sound recordings have more pitfalls than images since there are multiple copyrights in play. National anthems are an area that needs caution, since due diligence on the copyright of compositions has to be done since anthems are not exempt from copyright in many jurisdictions. I usually (almost always) upload Public Domain images and now I need access to upload a public domain mp3 file to add to a historical figure's wikipedia page. I know about copyrighted materials and the risks involved in using them, thats why I tend to upload only materials that are in the Public Domain or are explicitly Creative Commons. — Preceding unsigned comment added by NewishIdeas (talk • contribs) — Preceding undated comment was added at 00:43, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, your edit count is too low. You can always convert the mp3 to ogg if you want to upload it. (I could also upload the mp3 for you if you want). Abzeronow (talk) 00:57, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Uploads ready to go, also created a transcript with the largest model whisper has, so if transcript are needed in the future, let me know. All the Best -- ChuckTalk00:04, 16 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It's been suggested by User:Timtrent on the English Wikipedia that I apply for this right, so that I may use Help:VisualFileChange.js and review images here that I come across on my home wiki. Please see [1] for the discussion there. I'm a member of the NPP team there and I like to think I have a good understanding of permissions and copyright on the commons here. Thank you. Autopatrolled users can't review images on Ccommons. that must be done by a patroller or license reveiwer, depending on the file. Also, your edit count is too low, at only 90 edits. All the Best -- ChuckTalk01:00, 16 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I suspect you mean review in the sense of patrolling not license reviewing (which is a more advanced right). If you can get your edit count to around 200, I could grant you the right. Abzeronow (talk) 01:22, 16 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I meant it in so far as the relevant prior discussion, but I understand. Thanks for the feedback here, I will continue to plug away manually and try to make constructive edits here too. Thank you kindly, Bobby Cohn (talk) 02:21, 16 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Alachuckthebuck Your edit count advice has also been valuable.
I know Bobby Cohn to be a valuable contributor to enWiki, which is why I suggested they apply for this right in order to use VisuaFileChange to become more effective here. I am certain they will be an asset 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 09:28, 16 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Bobby Cohn: You wanted this so you could use VisualFileChange to tag files you come across in your en.wiki work when you spot them, correct? I think you can use VisualFileChange without this permission; it says on Help:VisualFileChange.jsIf you do not have the autopatrolled right: add mw.loader.load( 'ext.gadget.VisualFileChange' );to your common.js or <skin>.js. Can you go ahead and try that, and let me know if it works? If not, I would be happy to give you autopatrolled for, say, 90 days, and then making it permanent if there are no issues. I inherited 270 photos from Yemen 2005 that I wanted to upload to Commons. Since I was new and trying to observe all copyright rules, I sought help from my pilot Mirkur. She encouraged me and I was advised to use Template:Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs. Since I didn't find a possibility to bulk upload the photos with this template, I visited each photo page again to change the copyright entries: Category:2005_in_Yemen Now I noticed that I overlooked another mistake: In the German/English title/description I mostly confused Jemen with Yemen. Looking for bulk editing possibilities several programs are recommended like OpenRefine, VisualFileChange... but it seems that I'm not allowed to use them. Since there are some more series like Egypt and Greece, I wonder if there is a chance that I might use any small bulk editing program? Thank you. Using the “Just try it without installing” button at Help:VisualFileChange.js I could already do a lot of helpful bulk corrections. Apparently you are right that I don’t need advanced permissions. It still doesn’t work from my user pages but that's not really a problem.
But I noticed another small problem that you could perhaps help me with: On all picture sites there is a special information named “Kurzbeschreibungen (short descriptions)” which seems to be not part of the editable/replaceable data. My last 270 “Jemen/Yemen errors” are located there. How can I reach these entries with VFC? M.Schoettler (talk) 00:12, 18 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Deutsch Ergänze eine einzeilige Erklärung, was diese Datei darstellt.
English Jemen On most image sites this box is empty. Since I don't have any new informations I would like to just delete this wrong and superfluous entry English Jemen. M.Schoettler (talk) 09:16, 21 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If I'm reading Commons:File captions correctly, it's not possible to fix with any of the tools you (or I) have available. That data isn't stored in wikitext, frustratingly. A bot could do it, but I can't program. If you wanted, you could remove them manually, but I just wouldn't worry about it. The Squirrel Conspiracy (talk) 02:22, 22 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I edit commons sometimes. I also upload images. I do sometimes need to overwrite images when I find a higher quality version of the same image. I do a lot of requests for each individual image to be overwritten. I would like to be able to overwrite all images. Thank you. Sebbog13 (talk) 23:11, 19 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I have learnt a lot more since I first started uploading to Wikimedia Commons. When I started I didn't understand copyright that much, now I understand it way better. - Sebbog13 (talk) 13:51, 20 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Trusted and uploads (mainly Flickr transfers) look good. One file is currently at DR, but that case is far from obvious (PD stamp being a derivative of a copyrighted image) and the file was uploaded half a year ago. Thank you. Queen of Hearts (talk) 07:33, 23 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I would like this right to contribute to the Commons community by reviewing new files and pages. And I'm also a file mover. It would certainly be useful to mark newly uploaded files for which a move request has been made as checked. Thank you very much. זיו「Ziv」 • For love letters and other notes14:01, 20 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I do a fair bit of tagging for deletion and would like to be able to mark items as patrolled after tagging. I'll also probably go over Special:RecentChanges every once in a while as well, as I do the same on enwiki, but my contributions here have mostly been in Deletion Requests thus far. Thank you. I am requesting rollback rights on Wikimedia Commons. I already have rollback rights on English Wikipedia, Hindi Wikipedia and Wikidata. I am experienced in identifying and reverting vandalism and have been actively contributing to Wikimedia projects. Rollback rights on Commons will help me address vandalism quickly and maintain the quality of content here. Thank you for your consideration.TYPEINFO (talk) 19:56, 20 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
As a rough guideline, administrators usually require editors to have made at least 1,000 useful, non-botlike edits or a large amount of justified renaming requests at Commons before they will consider granting the filemover right.
Hello, I realize that I do not meet the rough guideline above, but I have a very specific use case for this right. I used to use Commons:GlobalReplace to globally replace file names to use SVG format instead of other formats that are lower quality. Since I became a global sysop recently, I am required to use 2FA on my account, meaning GlobalReplace no longer works since it is an old tool. I have experimented with the User:Perhelion/justReplace.js tool, which is suggested as the replacement, but I've been experiencing quite a few issues and errors, and some seem to be caused by the fact I am not a filemover here (the script sometimes tries to add entries to User:CommonsDelinker/commands/filemovers and crashes with errors when it cannot. I would also like to specify that I do not plan on using this right for renaming files on commons. I only would like to use it to replace file names globally using the justReplace script. If there is another way to do this (which I have not been able to find) without needing the filemover right, I am definitely open to that. Thank you. Ternera (talk) 22:39, 17 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
